Plane to Plane

Plane to Plane
The Story of Frederick Sage & Company, Limited. Walton, Peterborough 1911 to 1936.

'Plane to Plane' is an illustrated history of Frederick Sage & Company Limited. It is complemented by a large amount of photography from past and present.  Based in Walton, Peterborough, from 1911 to 1936, this quality shop fitting business was one of the many companies who had to change their role during the First World War. Sage became one of the pioneering sub-contractors, selected by The Admiralty  to produce seaplanes for the fledgling Royal Naval Air Service. Having completed this task with great efficiency and enthusiasm, the company continued to receive contracts for various types of aircraft throughout the First World War.
From 1915 onwards, the company gathered together its own aircraft design team which produced several machines of varying capabilities. Their greatest success came with their own seaplanes which were adopted by the Royal Naval Air Service as the basic training aircraft for 1919. However, time was against the company and with the end of the First World War this potentially large order was cancelled.
Despite several attempts to break into the aviation industry, Sage returned to its shop fitting past, remaining in Peterborough until 1936.
The Walton factory briefly returned to aircraft production in 1936/37 and became a Royal Army Ordnance Factory during the Second World War, specialising in torpedo production. Today the factory is still in use and has changed little since its construction in 1911.
